Racing Across Edinburgh
To celebrate their 60th Anniversary, ESOC put on the Race Across Edinburgh event, a local version of Race Across the World. Several club members took part ...
Thanks to Ann Haley for this report from ESOC's Race Across Edinburgh...
This was an Edinburgh based race of teams (pairs or families) using public transport to access orienteering courses in six diļ¬erent parks. After a mass start score event at Riccarton, teams were then given the location of the second park. Subsequent courses were linear orange standard, with subsequent venues revealed as you exited each park. The main challenge was picking the best route between the parks, but was at the mercy of the public transport network. Venues included Hailes Quarry, Saughton, West Princes Street, The Hermitage, and Spylaw. Mobile data on phones was banned, so we were provided with an A-Z of Edinburgh and a bus network map. The camaraderie on the buses was excellent. Five members of Interlopers took up the challenge. Team Interim (William Ivory/Duncan Edmonsdon, ELO) came 6th overall (4th Local team) in a time of 209.13 minutes, out of the 73 teams that took park. Haley Harriers (Ann and Stephen Haley) were 24th team (221.57) and the Ker Girls (Mary Ross and Rachel Fawthrop, ESOC) came 44th (266.26). Last but not least for Interlopers was Mike Stewart (along with Ewart Scott, ESOC) in 67th. However, there was a ‘Local Veteran’ class where one member of the team had to be 60, with Haley Harriers and the Ker Girls coming 2nd and 3rd to FVOSuperstars Rachel Kirkland and Alison Cunningham (221.30).
Thanks go to the organising team, all the volunteers at each park and the sponsors, Decathlon.
