British Middles, Northern and Scottish Champs Results

Nothing for months then 3 big events in 9 days. Plenty of Interlopers in action, with some excellent results ...

The weekend of 5th - 6th June saw many club members heading to the Lakes for 2 days of top quality orienteering. Saturday was the British Middle Distance Championships on Summerhouse Knott, a very technical area with thicker conifer cover to the north, and open deciduous woodland to the south. There was even an arena, and a run-in, albeit everyone was clapping finishers from a safe distance.  On Sunday the same car parking was used, with assembly in one of the car parking fields. COVID requirements meant callup was in the assembly field a full 30 minutes before your start time, with a socially distanced walk uphill to the start field. The map covered the northern two-thirds of the High Dam area, with a mixture of open woodland, some steeper slopes, and open moorland up high. The weather on both days was glorious, and there were a lot of very happy orienteers around.  Many thanks to Lakeland Orienteers and MDOC for putting on an excellent weekend.

  • M50L: Colin Eades (8/36)
  • W55S: Jane Carcas (4/15)
  • M60S: Keith Dawson (8/19)

As if that wasn't enough, this last week saw the Scottish Champs hosted by ESOC at Craig a Barns. This area was last visited in the 2019 Scottish 6 Days, and it was just as good this time around, on another great day weatherwise. Longer courses started on the open moorland at the north end, before following the shorter courses through the denser forest into the more open areas further south. Lots more technical challenge, and plenty of climb to keep everyone happy / tired / both. By my reckoning we have 4 Scottish Champions in the club, and 4 further winners of the short classes.
