DIRECTIONS
Parking and event assembly will be based in the overflow carpark at Livingston Rugby Club, address Almond Road, Mid Calder, Livingston, EH54 5NP (///hindered.beast.chimp). The Rugby club is accessed via a short cul-de-sac off Almond Road South. Easiest approach is via the A899, exiting at the Craigshill junction onto Almond Road.
Public transport: X28 from Edinburgh to Bathgate stops on Almond Road, then a 5 mins walk to the rugby club. Alternatively, it’s about a 2 km flat valley walk from Livingston Bus station (Almonvale Centre) along the Shale trail that follows the river east.
Cycling: Various options for off road approaches along the union canal then onto the Shale trail which runs through the area.
Train: Nearest station Uphall, then 2.5km walk to the Rugby club via the B8046 then Almond Road South (or bus number X28/276).

Seniors: £5 (SOA/BOF-affiliated club members) / £7 (non-members)
Juniors: £2.50 (SOA/BOF-affiliated club members) / £3.50 (non-members)
TOILETS
Toilets will be available in the Rugby Club.
OTHER FACILITIES
We believe that the Rugby Club will be open, and participants can purchase cans of juice and snacks.
COURSES
Planned to Sports Governing Body standards. Maps will be printed on waterproof paper | ||
Yellow | 2.0 km | Controls (checkpoints) are very easy to find, mostly on main paths, ideal for younger children and complete beginners |
Orange | 3.5 km | Moderate, controls are on or near paths, with more route choice. Good for progressing juniors and beginner adults who are reasonably confident reading a map. |
Green | 5.0 km | *Suitable for adult intermediate and experienced orienteers. |
* Note: The Green course has a couple of road crossings where there will be through traffic (30mph zone) therefore it is recommended that any younger juniors running this course are accompanied.
REGISTRATION, START AND FINISH
Start times will be between 1:30 and 3.00 pm.
Courses close at 4pm at which time controls will begin to be collected in. If you think you may take a while on your chosen course, please ask for an early start time.
Everyone must report to the finish and proceed to Download, whether they finish their courses or not.
ELECTRONIC TIMING
SportIdent (SI) electronic timing will be used, with SI Air enabled. If you have your own SI dibber, please bring it. Otherwise SI dibbers can be hired free of charge, but with £30 charge if lost. This must have been requested when booking your place for the event.
SAFETY NOTICE
Participants take part at their own risk and are responsible for their own safety during the event. By entering the event you are accepting this condition.
Parents/guardians should explain all safety aspects to all children and vulnerable persons in their care and if you are in any doubt about their ability to stay safe only allow them to participate with a carer.
A risk assessment has been carried out by the organiser.
Please note:
- Vehicles use the roads, driveways and car parks, so you must watch out for vehicles, give way and follow the Highway Code before, during and after the event ie: to and from your car as well as during the event. The Yellow course does not cross any roads.
- The area is used by the general public, including dog walkers and cyclists. Please respect their right to use the area and make room to pass safely. You are required to abide by the Scottish Outdoor Access Code (see http://www.outdooraccess-scotland.com/sites/default/files//docs/know_the_code_leaflet.pdf), and if necessary give way or stop running temporarily for safety reasons, e.g. some cyclists, dogs, etc.
- If you or one of your dependants have an underlying medical condition that might occur during the event, please brief the organiser in advance and leave a sealed written record at the event registration (to be destroyed afterwards).
- The area in a few places can be rough underfoot, steep and slippery, covered in deep vegetation or tree brash (cuttings) and have old fences, walls and ditches to cross. You should wear full leg cover, grippy footwear, watch for hazards, take care when crossing them and only go where you are able to cope.
- You are encouraged to carry a coat if there is a risk of bad weather and a whistle in case of injury (if injured give 6 long blasts, wait a minute, repeat).
